
Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of infections. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. It will not work for viral infections such as common cold and flu. Metronidazole extended release oral tablets are used to treat vaginal infections in women. It is also used alone or with other antibiotics to treat pelvic inflammatory disease and endocarditis. Metronidazole comes in many forms. These include an oral tablet, an oral capsule, a cream, gel, lotion and a vaginal gel. Some side effects are metallic taste, constipation, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite and headache.
