Premarin are tablets that contain conjugated estrogens, a mixture of estrogen hormones. Estrogen is necessary for many processes in the body and it is a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries.
Premarin is used to replace estrogen in women with ovarian failure or other conditions that cause a lack of natural estrogen in the body. It is also used to treat menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal changes and to prevent osteoporosis (bone loss) in menopausal women.
Premarin may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, cancer of the breast, uterus or ovaries. Estrogen lowers the hormone needed to produce breast milk and can slow breast milk production.
Some common side effects include back pain, headache, depression, sleep problem, nausea, gas, stomach pain, breast pain or vaginal itching/discharge and changes in the menstrual period. Other side effects may occur, in that case contact your health care practitioner immediately.
